Monthly Support for Sunhyun and Yeol-Shim’s Recovery Journey

Donation protected
Dear friends and family,

Seven months ago, Sunhyun’s life was hanging in the balance as he suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest. In a miracle, Sunhyun’s heartbeat returned after nearly 30 minutes. But in that time, significant physical and neurological damage had been done. No one knew what the future would hold, and the present felt unbearable.

Now, slowly and miraculously, Sunhyun is emerging into consciousness and beginning to regain control of his body. He is communicating—with his words and expressions—his heart to those around him. That is very good news. Yeol-Shim shared that ironically, she has become more emotional as things start to get better. It’s only when hope returns that the floodgates open.

It’s been a long, painful journey even to make it this far. Yeol-Shim and family are profoundly grateful for the support so many of you have shown – from visiting Sunhyun to offer him stimulation and hope, to daily prayers and donations. You have taught us all what it means to have community. Yeol-Shim and family are also incredibly thankful to the doctors, therapists and medical staff at the Spaulding Hospital in Cambridge, where he will continue to receive care and therapy for the foreseeable future to maximize his recovery.

In supporting Yeol-Shim in her journey, I’ve seen firsthand how complex and fragile the recovery process is. As his brain begins to heal, Sunhyun needs Yeol-Shim’s presence now more than ever – not just emotionally, but physically present at his side. His internal battle to recover is unknowable but Yeol-Shim is his best medicine! She is trying to be with him whenever possible, while juggling part-time work that allows her to support Sunhyun, along with all the responsibilities that have fallen on her shoulders. It is an impossible balancing act.

The first round of Go-Fund Me donations are now depleted, and rent is due.

As we look toward the rest of 2025, Sunhyun and Yeol-Shim need us more than ever. I want to invite you to help in whatever way you can with monthly expenses that are beyond the capacity of Yeol-Shim to carry alone. Even small monthly contributions — $10, $20, $50, $100, or whatever you can manage — will make a tangible difference. The total monthly need to keep their family afloat is around $4,122.

Here’s a breakdown of those expenses:
  • Rent – $2,600
  • Medical insurance – $997
  • Car payment & insurance – $350
  • Utilities & phone – $175

Every bit counts. If you're able, please consider clicking the monthly donation box on the GoFundMe page. And if there’s a specific part of their journey you’d like to support — rent, medicine, groceries — feel free to note that in the comments.

With heartfelt thanks for walking this road with us,
Aunt Heather
