on Tuesday October 28, 2025 my friend Summer and her cat Mateo were recently affected by a fire in her apartment building. The fire started in her next-door neighbor’s unit and caused significant smoke and soot damage throughout her home.

Thankfully, Summer and her sweet cat Mateo made it out safely, and her apartment management has temporarily relocated her while repairs are being made. Unfortunately, many of her belongings were damaged — including her couch and mattress, which were completely ruined by the smoke and soot.

Because she didn’t have renter’s insurance, she’s unfortunately having to cover the costs of replacing everything herself — a tough lesson that has definitely shown how important renter’s insurance can be. She’s trying to rebuild her home piece by piece, starting with the basics like furniture and bedding.
