Support Sumak Allpa During the COVID19 Pandemic!
Donation protected
The island Sumak Allpa , located in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, is home to a biodiversity management and environmental education program set up to conserve the endangered primate population of the region. Ultimately, the goal of the mission is to encourage reproduction and to relocate these endangered primates to areas where the species have disappeared. At Sumak Allpa, they strive to give essential environmental information to local, national and international visitors. Hector Vargas, the head of the project, also works to preserve and support indigenous peoples and their culture, language, and traditional way of life.
Tours of the island help fund the rehabilitation of the primates that live there, but the island is more than just a tourist destination. It represents learning opportunities for nearby indigenous communities, preservation and rehabilitation of endangered monkeys, and a site for numerous scientific studies. Hector has put tremendous effort and passion into creating this haven for students and animals. He and other indigenous people have been particularly impacted by Covid-19, and they are receiving little to no help from the Ecuadorian government. Since this mission is usually funded entirely by ecotourism, Hector is struggling to make enough income to sustain the project. So, they need our help! Funding Sumak Allpa means helping maintain an organization which fights desperately for environmental conservation and for the rights of indigenous people. It means allowing five month old baby monkeys to be rescued from the pet trade, and it means the continuance of an important source of economic and social capital for Hector and the indigenous community he works with.
This island and its mission mean so much not only to everyone who has witnessed Hector's passion for conservation and the environment, but also to the local indigenous communities Hector works with, and to the ecosystems it's supporting by rehabilitating endangered primates. We hope you consider donating to support a truly one of a kind place so that Hector can continue to educate visitors and do essential conservation work that is vital to maintaining the health of the Amazon rainforest!
