This is Sugar, my 9-year-old rescue chihuahua.
She is currently fighting for her tiny life in an emergency pet hospital. On Saturday (5-24-25), she started breathing funny. At first, I just thought she was overheating or something; she pants pretty often due to the Texas heat, but after a couple of hours, I knew she was in trouble.
Now, I’m not normally one to break down and cry, but seeing her struggle and not being able to help her myself; I panicked. We rushed her in, and right away, they took her to the back and started oxygen therapy.
After a couple of hours and a few x-rays, we were given bleak news. Her lungs were full of liquid, and the strange breathing was because she was essentially drowning. The vet looked at me and told me it wasn’t good, that she might not make it. I was told there was a slim possibility her little heart was strong enough, and if she could tough it out, the liquid could drain over time.
I broke down at first, but when she looked up at me with her little doll eyes, I knew she wanted to keep fighting! I told them to do what they can and spent the first night in the parking lot of the vet hospital. At about 4 a.m., I went to check on her, and she was sort of napping! Still huffing and puffing, but comfortable enough to close her eyes and nap! It was good news! I was so happy I started crying again.
She’s a little fighter, and I’m so glad I didn’t give up on her!
I put all my savings into her treatment at the emergency vet and am now asking for help from others.
If we get the full $2800, I may be able to have her monitored, tested, treated and back home safe and sound with no repeats of Saturday night!
