Healing takes many forms and we have to find ways to take care of each other. Thank you for taking in my story and being open to give if you are able. I will post regular updates via email but this is an urgent request as my eviction is set to take place on the 8th of June which is a Wednesday.
EVICTION SET FOR WEDNESDAY JUNE 8 2022
My name is Nyanchiew Sabit Gachgatwech. People know me as Martha, Sabit and Nyanchiew. I am an indigenous person from Sudan from the Nuar tribe. We are an old people, possibly the oldest from the Horn of Africa. I am a single mother of 4 children and a widow living in Buffalo, NY. I have survived the civil war for a decade in Sudan by escaping with my family in 1999 believing I can come to America to build a dream of life in safety. I even walked by lions on game land and through rivers where there were hippos killing people as I escaped the war.
MY STORY
I have lived, worked, volunteered and raised a family on the West Side of Buffalo for over 20 years. I love this community very much. I am a recognized leader in the Sudanese community of Buffalo’s West Side and I support many immigrants and refugees with their questions about life here where agencies fail to provide services. I use my extensive lived experience.
I have worked my entire adult life as an underpaid and underemployed mother, as a cashier, a teacher, a model, a home birth assistant doula, a cook, a disabled adult services aide and for the UN at refugee camps. I am fluent in Naath Nuar and English and want to learn more languages and gain more skills and certificates. I am going to return to university. My interests are law and finance.
I have volunteered with the India Walton campaign, Journey’s End, the Barack Obama Campaign, as a model for Buffalo State Fashion, Catholic Charities of Buffalo and with the Somalian and Ethiopian communities. Again, I love Buffalo and the West Side very much.
I love the diversity and I love the spirit of the people here but things have to change. I deserve and seek more security. I deserve to thrive.
TERROR IN BUFFALO NEW YORK
Like many Black people in Buffalo, right now, my family and I are living in a state of terror after the white supremacist masacre at Tops. We don’t want to walk the streets alone, take transit or go to crowded places yet we have to because we have no choice. We have had enough.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP
Myself and my children have survived the many attempts by predatory police, a predatory family court system and a predatory underfunded educational system to destroy my family, my well-being and my soul. The police on the West Side of Buffalo have been harassing and targeting my son and many other young people in my community.
EMERGENCY
Currently, I am under a 14 day eviction notice and I have 9 days left before they attempt to evict me. They sent me an eviction notice on May 25th, 9 days after the white supremacist shooting. Buffalo has a severe white supremacy problem and this existed before the shooting. I can’t even drive outside of the city without being harassed by police in Hamburg, Amherst, Cheektowaga and Kenmore. To Black people here, this is no surprise.
ILLEGAL EVICTION - RETALIATION
My landlord is trying to evict me for asking for repairs. The is illegal and retaliatory. I have not received COVID rent and utility relief because of disorganization, discrimination and a bureaucracy that purposefully does not work. My unemployment and food stamps have also recently been cut off.
6 MONTHS SUPPORT FOR RENT, FOOD, MENTAL HEALTH CARE, MOVING, TRANSPORTATION
I seek 6 months of financial support for rent and security deposit for a 4 bedroom apartment/ house in Buffalo preferably in the West Side, for living costs, for transportation costs, for mental health care for my children especially in the wake of this shooting.
WE CAN TEACH THE WORLD HOW TO HEAL BY TAKING CARE OF EACH OTHER.
Healing takes many forms and we have to find ways to take care of each other. Thank you for taking in my story and being open to give if you are able. I will post regular updates via email but this is an urgent request as my eviction is set to take place on the 8th of June which is a Wednesday.
