We are proud educators at Elysian Heights Arts Magnet in Echo park and members of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA). This week we are going on strike in solidarity with SEIU Local 99 members which include cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, special education assistants, and other essential school workers in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). These critical support staff keep our school running, and make our jobs as educators possible.
They will lead a three-day strike from Tuesday, March 21 through Thursday, March 23 to protest the school district’s unfair practices, and we will be right there beside them on the picket line.
We have over 10 SEIU 99 coworkers at our school who will be significantly financially impacted by the strike and many are very stressed by the prospect of giving up 3 days' pay. We’re raising money to help ease the financial burden of going on strike for our coworkers in SEIU 99.
The average salary for SEIU 99 members in LAUSD is $25,000 a year. One in three SEIU 99 members have either been unhoused or in danger of being unhoused while working for LAUSD. Nearly a quarter report not having enough to eat. This strike is a last-resort effort to get the district, which has $5 billion in reserves, to pay them a living wage and improve their working conditions. This benefits all of us!
We’re asking our family and friends and members of our Elysian Heights school community to donate whatever they can to relieve the financial burden of striking for our school’s beloved support staff. That way, they can join us on the picket line instead of having to find extra work to make up for lost pay.
All proceeds from this fundraiser will be divided between our SEIU 99 members at Elysian Heights and any additional funds beyond the needed amount for strikers will be used for strike expenses.
If we stand together, we can make LAUSD a district where everyone — teachers, students, parents, and support staff — can thrive.
We’re in this together, and we appreciate all of your amazing solidarity!
