Steve’s journey over the past few months has been nothing short of extraordinary. Diagnosed with non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis, he became critically ill and was rushed to Duke Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. His condition was so severe that he was moved to the top of the organ transplant list, and within days of being close to losing his life, a miracle occurred—a donor liver became available. The transplant was a success, but Steve’s fight is far from over. While recovering, his kidneys failed, and despite doctors’ hopes, they have not returned to normal. He now undergoes kidney dialysis three times a week, each session lasting four hours, and there is a strong possibility that he will need a kidney transplant. Steve is still recovering from the liver transplant, unable to walk, barely able to eat, and facing the threat of a feeding tube.
Throughout this ordeal, Vanessa, his fiancée, has been by his side every step of the way. She is unable to work as she cares for Steve and must live in a hotel near the hospital, as it is mandatory for the caregiver to be close by. Because they are engaged but not married, Vanessa does not qualify for Family Medical Leave and is currently on leave of absence without pay. With no income, the financial burden has become overwhelming. The funds raised will help cover hotel costs, food, daily hospital parking, laundry, and other essentials, all while they continue to manage their regular living expenses back home.
Thank you to the large circle of Friends and the Wanderlust of Wilmington Group that have become Family for Steve and Vanessa. Not having Family nearby has been difficult, but with the help of all the amazing Friends who have given so much support both emotionally and financially, this would not have been possible. Your continued support means the world to them as they navigate this challenging journey.
