Hello, my name is Emily and my dad is Steve Hacker. In 2007, Dad began his heart failure journey with countless doctor appointments, medications, surgeries, research, and hospital stays all that led up to yesterday. Dad was given a new gift of life from a donor--my dad received a heart transplant. Without the transplant, Dad's life expectancy was only two to three years, however, now with this new lease on life, Dad is looking at 15 or more years of life! Now comes the really difficult part. Dad has quite a journey of healing ahead of him as well as bills for lodging, new medicine co-pays, travel expenses, and food for himself and his carers. Dad will be in St. Mary's hospital for two to three weeks and then will move into the Gift of Life house to continue his healing journey. He will be in the Gift of Life house for roughly three months as he will have doctor's appointments to ensure that his body is handling his new heart.
