My name is Steve, and I have worked for Oklahoma City for over 17 years in many capacities, and have been in the Public Works Warehouse since 2019. On June 18th, 2025, I noticed a small red dot on my left index finger during my shift. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but over the next few days, it became clear something was seriously wrong. By the following week, my finger had become swollen and painful, and I had to take time off work. My primary doctor prescribed antibiotics, but my condition kept getting worse. I ended up at a wound clinic, where I was told I needed immediate surgery to save my finger. Since then, I’ve been dealing with daily wound care, follow-up appointments, and a finger that still won’t bend or heal properly. I’m still under my surgeon’s care and unable to return to work until I recover.


I reported the injury to my employer, and my boss filed a workers comp claim, but it was denied. Because of this, I’ve used up all my sick time and my paychecks have stopped. I live paycheck to paycheck, and now I’m struggling to cover my basic living expenses—my house payment, car payment, bills, and credit cards. I’ve hired a lawyer to fight the workers comp denial, but in the meantime, I’m on my own and at a desperate point.


I’ve always been dedicated to my job and my community, and it’s hard to ask for help. But right now, I need support to get through this period while I heal and fight for the benefits I deserve.
