Help My Brother Get the Care and Equipment He Desperately Needs

My brother Steve has been bravely battling a debilitating illness that attacks his muscles, making everyday tasks a constant struggle. The doctors are currently treating him for Myasthenia Gravis, but his exact diagnosis remains uncertain. This condition causes him severe muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, frequent choking, and breathing challenges that require him to be on oxygen and use a walker to get around.

Over the past few months, he has been in and out of the ICU four times — and we almost lost him. He has spent more than a month in the hospital and rehab, working hard to regain strength so he can safely return home. Even with all his effort, daily life continues to be a tremendous challenge.

Because of his disability, he is on a fixed income and struggles to afford the medical equipment he desperately needs. His insurance has denied coverage for a portable oxygen concentrator, which would make a huge difference in his quality of life. Right now, when he travels to his doctor appointments in Kansas City—a 2½-hour drive each way—he has to haul multiple heavy oxygen tanks. Unfortunately, these tanks don’t last long enough for the full trip and overnight stays, putting his health and safety at risk.

In addition, his only vehicle has a manual transmission and no air conditioning. Due to his muscle weakness, he can no longer safely shift gears, and the lack of A/C makes travel extremely difficult and dangerous given his condition.

Assistance toward a reliable, accessible vehicle with automatic transmission and A/C for medical travel
