My name is Steven Smatlak. I reside with my partner, Jocelyn, and her son, Nathaniel. I have been employed by American Airlines for 18 years. Due to a work-related wear-and-tear injury to my back, I have been managing back issues for several years and have utilized FMLA. My back condition deteriorated significantly in November 2024. Since then, I worked approximately 3-4 weeks, with my last day of work being March 30, 2025. I have been on unpaid medical leave for the past year. I was able to return to work for a few weeks in March, but I was unable to continue due to the worsening of my back condition. My mobility is severely limited, as I am unable to stand or walk for more than 20 minutes. I am trying to see if my current unpaid medical leave can change to paid medical leave, but this appears unlikely. I am facing a loss of income, with my last payment received on May 30, 2025, and an uncertain return-to-work timeline. I have bills, including medical expenses. I have been diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis and underwent spine surgery on June 16th. I also have issues with my L5-S1 and having 3 herniated disks. Despite taking pain medication, I am still experiencing constant pain.

I had my second spinal surgery on 9/15 and yes still in pain just hope recovery will be quick. I am requesting any available assistance for myself and my family. Would like to be more involved with my family than pretty much stuck in the house and cant do anything.

Just my phyical and water therapy that Im able to do but doesnt help much.
