There's an excellent chance that if you have lived in Pacifica for decades, you know Steve Hansel, or know of him. For the last 50+ years, Steve has been a devoted member of this town, embodying the motto of the Lions Club he loves so much: We Serve.
As a Type 1 diabetic, Steve is no stranger to troubles -- a below-the-knee amputation on his left foot, kidney transplant, heart attack, stent placement, 2 strokes, retina surgery, and skin cancer MOS surgery (Squamous Cell) -- but he has always been stoic and never asked for help, steadfastly insisting that others' needs come before his own.
But he needs us now. After another medical setback this month, Steve has had a partial amputation of his remaining foot, spending 9 days in the hospital before being readmitted yesterday for another surgery and another hospital stay. Steve will need a specialized wheelchair, prosthetic shoes, and foot inserts. He will also need physical therapy and occupational therapy, as well as wound care, not to mention help with medical copays and 20% coinsurance.
To add insult to injury, his beloved wife and caregiver Sherry lost her job while on medical leave of her own, leaving the couple with only Steve's meager Social Security to live on.
While Steve is, as usual, in good spirits and making bad jokes about his feet, his mounting medical bills and needs are no laughing matter. This man who has always served others needs our help now, and he and Sherry are incredibly grateful for any help you can provide.
