In September 2025, at just 43 years old, Sonoma County Sheriff’s Detective Steve Cummings was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma cancer. Since then, Steve has been fighting through treatment while continuing to show up for his family, his coworkers, and his community the same way he always has.
As of May 2026, Steve has begun stem cell treatment at the Stanford Cancer Institute. The treatment has been extremely difficult and has taken a major physical, emotional, and financial toll on Steve, his wife, and their two young children. Between extended stays away from home, housing during treatment, medical expenses, and the day-to-day impact this has had on their family, the burden has been overwhelming.
Even through chemotherapy and months of treatment, Steve continued going to work whenever he physically could. Many days, he would go to treatment and then come straight into the office afterward. No matter how hard things got, if you asked Steve how he was doing, his answer was always the same: “Feeling 100%.”
Many people in Sonoma County and beyond know Steve Cummings. He has spent his entire adult life serving others. Steve started as a volunteer firefighter in Sonoma County before becoming a police officer with the Petaluma Police Department in 2014. In 2020, he was recognized as the VFW Post 1929 “Officer of the Year.” In 2021, Steve joined the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, where he currently serves as a SWAT team leader and Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Detective.
To the people who know him, Steve is the guy who always shows up. He’s the first one to help someone else and the last person who would ever ask for help himself. He’s respected not just for the work he does, but for the way he treats people. He has mentored countless coworkers, helped victims through some of the hardest moments of their lives, and built lifelong friendships everywhere he’s gone.
Anyone who knows Steve knows he would never want attention or a fundraiser for himself. But right now, his family needs support while he focuses on getting through treatment and recovering.
If you are able to donate, any amount will help ease some of the financial stress on Steve and his family during this fight. Most of all, your support will allow them to focus on what matters most right now — Steve’s recovery.
Thank you for supporting Steve and the Cummings family.
