Support Steve and Susan Through This Unpredictable Journey.

Have you ever met a person for the first time and felt instantly seen by them? Their personality makes you feel like a long time friend welcomed back after an extended time away or just instantly accepted fully for who you are? How about meeting someone and hardly knowing them prior to them lending you a hand in a time of need, have you experienced this?

If you've met Steve, then you likely know this feeling or have been offered help in a time of need.

I have known Steve for around 7 years. I know Steve through his marriage to my boss Susan, whom now I call a great friend. In the last couple years I have had the pleasure to get to know Steve more, but not as much as many of you reading this will know him.

I once was mistaken to be Steve's daughter and I happily accepted that mistaken title because Steve is an incredible man and I’d be honored to have him as a father.

A few things I learned early on about who Steve is;
  • Steve was dealt a crappy hand early on, he has had a chronic medical condition for the majority of his life, but he doesn’t let that hinder him.
  • He's so gosh darn genuine.
  • He has a servant's heart. He goes above and beyond to ensure that in his presence you have what you need and what you want. If he knows that you are having a rough time he will go from lengths as far as a simple texted silly meme to coming and plowing your driveway knowing you and your significant other are laid up yourselves.
  • He is a comedian which brightens every day!
  • He loves his people deeply! His wife, his family, his friends, his fur-babies!
  • He cares abundantly about the things important to not only himself, but his people. Many times I have seen Steve around the veterinary practice that his wife owns, helping out, doing maintenance, installing things or plowing snow because he cares about others.
  • He gives without expectation of anything in return!

And this is why I have taken it upon myself to create this GoFundMe. Steve and Susan give without expectation of anything in return. I personally have been on the receiving side of their giving during my time of need and now I want to aid in returning the kindness and support in their time of need.

As many of you may know, the last 9 months have brought a lot of health struggles, missed work, frustration, and lack of answers, but have ultimately brought Steve to a cancer diagnosis. Tumors found in his bile ducts, resulting in not only the need for multiple procedures to place and replace stents, but also the need for radiation, chemo and in due time a full liver transplant.

While it is a huge relief that Steve is able to receive amazing care through Mayo Clinic here in Rochester, Minnesota it has taken a toll financially. The travel, the all too common last minute overnight stays in Rochester, missed work for both Steve and Susan, and the soon to be couple months they will need to remain "local" to Rochester post liver transplant.

I am writing on their behalf to ask that you generously consider financially supporting them during their time of need if you are in a place to do so. Cancer, as too many people know, is no small feat, it takes a village. Chronic medical issues are in and of themselves a full time job and both Steve and Susan have faced each day with bravery even through hardship and unknowns. No amount would be too small, as even the smallest contribution would provide Steve and Susan a buffer in their financial burden, and in their worries and concerns, while allowing them to remain focused on Steve’s care moving forward.

I want to extend my gratitude for your consideration to financially support them. I also want to extend my heartfelt understanding that we know not everyone is in a position to financially support others and this is ok. Your thoughts and support are far more than enough too! I’d never wish this journey on anyone, but it has brought additional dislike that it has come upon two of the most amazing people that I know.
