Eight years ago, the unthinkable happened to my nephew, Stephen. On his 26th birthday, he had a stroke. Initially, it robbed him of speech, the ability to read and write. Through therapy, he was able to regain those functions and continue his career as an ICU nurse. He bought a house and spent the last few years on home improvement projects. During our last brunch together, we talked of wanting to pursue a CRNA degree. Life, which had been so unfair, was good.
On Sunday, February 22, out of the blue, he suffered his second stroke. Doctors worked to clear the first clot but early the next morning, he had a third stroke, this one near his brain stem. I don’t have to tell you how devastating this is. He remains in the ICU, with each day making incremental gains. It is unknown at this time what functions he will recover or what his future will hold. But it will undoubtedly be a long recovery.
We all have burdens in our lives. Today, for me at least, they seem so insignificant compared to what Stephen faces. But maybe, if we work together, we can at least lighten the financial load he is facing so he can focus on healing. We all feel helpless in times like this. Many of you have asked what you can do. So here’s the ask: give, pray and share. If you are a friend, a co-worker, a relative or a neighbor, help me build a community of giving for Stephen. Any amount will help. Donate through this app or contact me if you want to give but would rather not use this app. All of the funds will be given to Stephen. If you can’t give, please pray for Stephen’s recovery. He needs all of our prayers now and for the next several months. And lastly, help me spread the word about Stephen. Share a link to this message on your socials. Let’s raise him up in prayer and good vibes. He needs it.
