Today is my 55th birthday, and I never imagined I would be facing breast cancer at this stage of my life. Just before last Halloween, I received the diagnosis that changed everything. The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of shock, gathering information, meeting with physicians, and making difficult decisions about my treatment. Telling Alex and Zachary the news was one of the most difficult, bravest challenges I've ever faced. Surrounded by an amazing medical team at Mount Sinai and the unwavering support of friends and family, I underwent a double mastectomy in December and am now in the midst of chemotherapy and Herceptin treatments. I am deeply grateful that my cancer was detected as early as possible, and I am blessed with a positive prognosis and a strong support system.
However, cancer impacts every aspect of life, including finances. As a self-employed mental health practitioner, I do not have access to FMLA or PTO, and the side effects of surgery and chemotherapy have forced me to reduce my work. After three months of chemotherapy, I will enter the reconstructive phase of surgery, which will take me away from work again for an extended period and further impact my ability to earn. While I have always tried to be prepared for emergencies, the costs of treatment and daily living have quickly added up. The funds raised here will help cover medical bills for both 2025 and 2026, as well as basic living expenses to supplement the lost income during this challenging time.
I am so grateful for the outpouring of love and support from family and friends, especially Michael, who has been an absolute rock. My wish is to continue to be at peace while my body is at war; to focus my energy on healing, love, laughter, and longevity. Notes of encouragement, outreach, and knowing that even during this journey, I am here for you, are all deeply appreciated. I am humbled by the kindness of this community. Thank you for standing with me and my family.
