Stephanie and Fred have been enduring a series of hardships for several years. Fred was diagnosed with AML in 2011, and after undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant, he thankfully remains in remission. However, the aftermath of his treatments brought a host of side effects. About two years ago, Fred was found to have severe scarring of his lungs and rheumatoid arthritis. Then, last year, he suffered his first heart attack, which required four stents. Doctors also discovered that his heart and arteries had sustained radiation damage. This past Monday, Fred was admitted for another heart attack, and now has seven stents. While the procedure was successful, the high-dose blood thinners led to a brain bleed and stroke, resulting in a stay in the STICU. He is currently considered critical, with right-side weakness, speech, and cognitive impairment preventing him from communicating. He has a long road ahead for recovery.

Stephanie has also faced her own health challenges, having just undergone surgery last month with hopes of returning to work. Unfortunately, Fred’s recent health crisis means she is now torn between the need to earn income and the desire to be with her husband and family during this difficult time. With her recent job change, she is unable to draw FMLA, adding to their financial strain.
