Hi, we're a group of students working on a comedy short film named 'Stare' about a world where staring contests are a popular sport, akin to AFL.
Logline - At the national staring contest championship match, the pinnacles of their field face off against each other leading to a win so much deeper than the contest itself.
Synopsis - The Championship Match the world has been waiting for. Manny Daniels, the reigning champion, vs. Chris Stanfield, the only man whose gaze can intimidate Manny. Sporting history will be changed forever as the greatest staring contest ever starts.
The competitors are so masterful in their craft, that through nothing but the exchange of stares they see into each other's very soul. Seeing the very core of each other they reach an understanding no other athlete can imagine, but Manny can’t keep up. Manny loses the match and the title but feels more pride than he ever felt from winning.
Director: Fifi Lopez
‘Stare’ is a comedy-drama that revolves around Manny and Chris, two fierce competitors vying for a win in the prestigious Staring Contest Grand Finals. When I first read the synopsis, I was instantly drawn to the project due to its intriguing duality. I love the concept of characters taking something seemingly trivial, like a staring contest, so seriously that it not only captures the audience's attention but also elicits genuine investment.
‘Stare’ incorporates elements of sports drama while maintaining a comedic, satirical tone. Beneath the surface, the film unfolds as a story of human connection and sacrifice. My aspiration is to make a film that balances humour and emotion. To achieve this, I intend to place our nuanced and grounded characters within an absurd and exaggerated world, allowing their relatable personalities to shine.
In essence, this project seeks to simultaneously entertain and touch the hearts of its audience, combining laughter and genuine emotional resonance to create something truly memorable. Anything you can spare to bring this film to life would be greatly appreciated.
We would use the money to get access to locations, and pay our actors for their time and their talent. We'd also use it to book camera gear and equipment, as well as catering our large cast and crew. Thanks so much.
