UPDATE: Thank you so much! We reached our fundraising goal and will be ordering tomorrow! I have turned off donations. We are so beyond grateful for everyone who shared and donated. ♥️♥️♥️
Will post pictures on here when we go on our first adventure! Thank you again! ♥️
Spencer was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome on March 30, 2020. Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological disorder that occurs almost exclusively in girls and leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of the child’s life: their ability to speak, walk, eat, and even breathe easily.
Our family has always loved being out in nature and hiking. With Spencer being a wheelchair user she cannot access trails that are not paved. Typically at the parks Will and I have to spilt up with the kids because Logan loves going into the woods and sadly her wheelchair and stroller are not made to handle that.
When she was younger we were able to carry her in a pack on our backs but now at 6 years old and 50lbs, it is not doable for us or her. We also used to be able to use a wagon to do some very flat paths but as she’s gotten older, she needs more lateral support than a wagon can give. She loves going to parks and being outside.
An amazing company called Huckleberry Hiking created a tandem hiking cart to make all trails accessible for both kids and adults. This cart can handle a rider up to 150lbs and allows 75% of the riders weight to transfer to the wheel. This cart breaks through mobility barriers by making even mountain trails accessible to everyone.
A very sweet Rett family actually bought their cart (all the way from New Mexico) for us to try over winter break when they came up East to visit family. It was zero degrees that day, but we took it out for a test run on our street. I had been eyeing the cart since I heard about it in the spring of 2024 but the price point was just too high. The company actually dropped the price $500 recently and now the cost is $2,199.00.
I have applied for multiple grants in hopes to get some part of the cost covered but sadly there are very few resources for non-medical equipment. If you know me, you know I’m all about grants. After a year of applying and denials, I decided to try a go fund me. I really feel that this cart would make the perfect birthday present for Spence who turns 7 on April 20th.
She deserves to be able to see the world and all the beauty it has to offer. ♥️
