Support Prem's wife, Sonu's Fight for a New Kidney

Donation protected
Sonu Phuyal received her first kidney transplant nine years ago. Her loving mother donated her the kidney, granting Sonu a chance to live a fuller life. However, her transplanted kidney has gradually lost its functionality. Today, her kidney has completely deteriorated and is non-functioning. A second kidney transplant is her only hope for survival.

Medical History
It began with subtle symptoms that she initially brushed off. Over time, however, her condition worsened. A series of tests revealed significant impairment. And in 2014, she was diagnosed with kidney failure.

It almost took 3 years of hemodialysis before finally being able to get a kidney from her mother. In 2017, the first kidney transplant surgery was successful.

After her kidney transplant, Sonu followed medical advice and maintained a healthy lifestyle to ensure her recovery.

In 2019, Sonu's immune system was heavily affected by the COVID-19 vaccine, leading to complications that appeared shortly after. The mandatory vaccine nullified the effects of immunosuppressant medication she was on.

Diagnostic Conclusion 2024
  • Following the vaccine in 2019, her immune system reacted abnormally causing clumps of immune protein deposits in the kidney’s filtering units. Trace amount protein leakage was found.
  • Biopsy in 2021 gave multiple indicators that small blood vessels in the transplanted kidney have been damaged over the years; also, signs of rapid tissue damage were noticed.
  • Extensive tests confirm active antibody-mediated rejection of the transplanted kidney, indicating a point of no return.

Financial Urgency
The financial burden of this life-saving procedure is overwhelming for Prem and Sonu. They have already been struggling with the medical expenses pushing them towards getting loans and seeking every possible government grant. Prem works tirelessly as a driver, and his income is nowhere sufficient to cover the astronomical medical expenses of another kidney transplant.

Utmost necessity
The biggest challenge in this journey is not just the financial strain but also finding a compatible kidney donor. Nepal’s organ transplantation act prohibits any living donor who are not close relatives to donate their kidney, meaning Sonu will have to travel to India in order to search for a kidney and register for the transplantation surgery. While her mother was her hero nine years ago, the search for a second donor must extend far and wide.

Fundraiser goal
We are aiming to raise a total of USD 60,000 to cover donor compatibility tests, transplant surgery, post-operative care, lodging & fooding in India and contingencies.

The urgency and complexity of this situation require extensive resources and support.

We are reaching out to you, compassionate friends, to help Sonu in her critical time of need. Your generous contributions can provide the necessary funds for the transplant and support the donor search efforts. Every donation, no matter how small, brings Sonu one step closer to a new kidney and a chance to live again. Please join us in supporting Sonu and giving her the hope and strength to overcome this immense challenge. Together, we can make a difference.
