Support Sonny and Spencer Through Their Car Crash Crisis
Donation protected
The Story:
In the early hours of Memorial Day morning, Jameson (Sonny) Kreig, was involved in a catastrophic car crash while driving home to Buffalo from Cleveland. What should have been a simple trip back from a concert ended in a traumatic accident that left Sonny with 10 broken bones and in urgent need of care and support.
At the time of the crash, Sonny was asleep in the backseat of the vehicle, while their spouse drove and their mutual friend slept in the passenger seat. About twenty minutes from home, Sonny’s spouse drifted off for a moment on Route 5—very near the lake (see *parked car* in image). The car collided with and obliterated a telephone pole, flipped multiple times, and left all three passengers unconscious.
Thankfully, the emergency response was immediate, and no other driver was injured.
Thankfully, both the driver and passenger had their seatbelts on—or they would have been hurled through the windshield.
Thankfully, the vehicle collided with a telephone pole, or they all would have driven right into the lake.
When Sonny regained consciousness, they found themself covered in blood, in pain and shock, and surrounded by emergency responders. They walked to the ambulance in a daze, already fearing the impending financial burden of accepting necessary help from the paramedics. Their spouse was able to accompany them to Emergency, where they were admitted for trauma and began diagnosis and treatment.
The Physical Toll:
Though Sonny thankfully didn’t need emergency surgery, they were hospitalized for three days to stabilize their injuries. After going through numerous CT scans, X-rays, and an extremely traumatic MRI procedure, Sonny has been discharged and is now on the slow road to recovery. The injuries they sustained include:
Mild facial abrasions
Broken Bones
- C6 and C7 (neck vertebrae)
- T4 and T9 (thoracic vertebrae)
- Right ribs 1, 5, 6, and 7
- Their nose
- Left orbital bone (around the eye)
A moderate concussion
These breaks are not only painful but have left Sonny with limited mobility and constant discomfort. The muscle tension and trauma, in combination with the nerve damage and inflammation, are leading to their pain fluctuating a great deal; and the moderate severity of their concussion is making basic tasks exhausting.
The Mental Toll:
While the physical injuries are severe, the emotional and psychological strain has been equally, perhaps more, overwhelming. The multiple medical procedures—especially the MRI—were particularly traumatic for Sonny, who has a history of medical/hospital anxiety and extremely severe claustrophobia.
The MRI procedure—with its confined space and overstimulating nature (the noise and heat is genuinely painful to many autistic individuals, including Sonny)—led to frequent panic attacks and deep emotional distress during their stay in the hospital.
Despite the excellent care they received while at ECMC, the combination of physical pain and the constant stress of medical tests, in addition to the basic disruption of their daily routines and functions as an autistic individual, has taken a heavy toll on their mental health, making this recovery period even more difficult.
And:
On top of their personal physical and emotional challenges, Sonny’s spouse, Spencer, is also deeply affected by this accident. In addition to the obvious loss of their family vehicle, due to the severity of Sonny’s injuries, Spencer is also unable to work and is now solely responsible for both caregiving and housekeeping. This loss of both their incomes, combined with the need to care for Sonny’s physical and emotional well-being around the clock, has placed the family in a stressful financial position as they wait to receive compensation for lost wages and other undetermined insurance settlements.
How Can You Help?
We’re asking for your support during this incredibly difficult time. Your generous donations will help cover:
- Medical expenses for follow-up appointments, medications, equipment, treatments, rehabilitation, therapy, etc.
- Loss of income for both Sonny and Spencer, who are unable to work while navigating this recovery process.
- Day-to-day living expenses for the family, including food, pet care, transportation, and any other necessities they can’t afford due to their current situation.
Why Your Support Matters Now:
️⚧️It’s Pride Month, a time when we come together as a community to show love, strength, and support for each other—especially for those who need it most.
For Sonny, this is more than just a time of physical recovery; it’s a period of vulnerability in which the emotional toll is just as heavy as the physical one. Being visibly queer is a political existence, and at times a dangerous one.
Fund the resistance!
Transgender people—especially those who are disabled, struggling with mental health, and in other vulnerable situations—often face unique challenges in accessing care and receiving the support they need.
Now, more than ever, it is essential to show up for our community. This year especially, in the wake of so much violence against our people, let us show our strength of love, and power of healing, and enormous capacity for compassion. Sonny has shown so much strength, bravery, and most of all kindness for their community; your donation, no matter how small, will make a profound difference in their recovery and help them rebuild their life after this traumatic accident.
Sonny has pledged to donate unneeded funds to local community organization GLYS, with the goal of protecting and advocating for transgender and nonbinary youth. If you're unable to contribute financially, sharing this page with your friends and community can be just as powerful.
Thank you for showing compassion and standing with Sonny during their journey of healing. Your kindness means everything to them.
