It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our daughter, Sonia Figueroa. She passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday morning due to complications from MELAS Syndrome, the same disease that claimed her sister's life four years prior. Sonia bravely battled this illness since her diagnosis at age seven. For ten years, she experienced significant health challenges and personal hardships, including bullying at school and progressive functional decline resulting from dementia that began just before her sister's death. Her condition progressed to the point of nonverbal communication and significant motor skill loss, ultimately leading to her being bedridden until her passing.
