The answer to Captain Kirk's question in the cartoon is "Probably not." A bit of dark humor, as our friend Soli can't really see well these days!

My name is Katie and I'm reaching out today on behalf of Soli Wright—a friend and fellow volunteer who’s going through a really tough time. Soli has been diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes and she does not have insurance. Her wildly distorted vision is making it nearly impossible for her to see what she’s doing in any detail. She can’t safely do her job grooming dogs. She can’t read notes or complete paperwork when distributing pet food at Cody’s Friends each week. And she sure as heck shouldn’t be trying to cut up meat or vegetables in the kitchen!

A year ago Soli had a complicated retina surgery due to detachment, and since then the cataracts have grown quickly. After a consultation this week with Hodges Eye Care and Surgical Center in Tucson, Soli was advised to schedule surgery for both eyes as soon as possible. For now, Soli is starting with the right eye – the one that is in much worse shape - hoping to raise the necessary funds by the date of her pre-surgical appointment, Sept. 8.

The cataract surgery cost is $3745 per eye for a monofocal lens that will allow her to regain vision and depth perception but still require glasses or contact lenses. (The cost for the gold standard multifocal lens is $6385!) Without insurance, this amount is well beyond what Soli can afford on her own.
