Life threw me a curveball. I thought I’d be graduating this May and jumping straight into building my career, but instead, I’m preparing for spinal surgery and facing a three-month recovery.

I’ve always prided myself on being resourceful and figuring things out on my own. I’m not someone who usually asks for help, but this time, I need to.

I have a rare genetic disorder called schwannomatosis, which causes tumors to grow on nerves. I’ve been living with a tumor growing on a nerve near my L5-S1 for the past four years. It causes constant nerve pain down my left leg, and over time it’s gotten significantly worse. The tumor has grown to about one inch by half an inch, and it’s still growing.

I also have another tumor on my auditory canal that’s being monitored, and I’ve had one surgically removed from my thigh in the past. This condition is something I’ve learned to manage and live with, but this particular tumor has reached a point where it’s no longer manageable.

The surgery is scheduled to happen shortly after graduation. I had left my job a while back to focus fully on school and setting myself up for a stable future. I didn’t expect that instead of starting the next chapter of my life, I’d be recovering from a major surgery without any income.

La vida me lanzó una curva inesperada. Pensé que en mayo estaría graduándome y comenzando mi carrera, pero en cambio, me estoy preparando para una cirugía de columna y enfrentando una recuperación de tres meses.

Siempre me he sentido orgullosa de ser una persona ingeniosa, que sabe cómo salir adelante por su cuenta. No soy de las que suelen pedir ayuda, pero esta vez, la necesito.

Tengo un trastorno genético raro llamado schwannomatosis, que provoca el crecimiento de tumores en los nervios. He vivido los últimos cuatro años con un tumor creciendo en un nervio cerca de mi L5-S1. Me causa un dolor constante que baja por la pierna izquierda, y con el tiempo ha empeorado bastante. El tumor ha crecido hasta medir aproximadamente una pulgada por media pulgada, y sigue creciendo.

También tengo otro tumor en el canal auditivo que están monitoreando, y en el pasado me removieron uno del muslo mediante cirugía. He aprendido a vivir con esta condición, pero este tumor en particular ya llegó a un punto en el que no se puede manejar sin intervención.

La cirugía está programada para poco después de mi graduación. Hace un tiempo dejé mi trabajo para poder enfocarme de lleno en mis estudios y construir un futuro estable. Nunca imaginé que, en lugar de comenzar el siguiente capítulo de mi vida, estaría recuperándome de una cirugía importante sin ingresos.
