Sofia was diagnosed with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy(HIE) at birth, and her journey since then has been filled with challenges and hope. Sofia has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, sometimes needs to be fed through a feeding tube, and relies on seizure medication to manage her condition. Despite these obstacles, Monika and Ryan have worked tirelessly to give Sofia every opportunity for growth and healing. Due to aggressive early therapy interventions, she continues to develop beautifully and gain skills beyond what was initially predicted for her.
Recently, Sofia has been accepted into a stem-cell treatment program at Duke University in North Carolina that could offer new possibilities for Sofia’s treatment and development. The treatment is still in clinical trials, but preliminary data show real improvements in motor function in children with cerebral palsy who receive this treatment. Given Sofia’s amazing progress so far, her wonderful team at CHOP believe stem cell treatment offers her the possibility of even further progress.
Participating in this trial is a chance for Sofia to access cutting-edge care, but it comes with significant financial hurdles. Monika and Ryan will need to cover the cost of the trial itself, as well as travel expenses, including flights or driving, and hotel stays while Sofia participates in the study.
This fundraiser is dedicated to helping Monika and Ryan ease the financial burden of Sofia’s participation in the clinical trial. Every contribution will go directly toward medical costs, travel, and accommodations, giving Sofia the best chance to benefit from this promising research. Your support will help Monika and Ryan focus on what matters most: Sofia’s health and future.
