My name is Angie Bolaños, and I am creating this GoFundMe for my dear friend Sofia Hernandez and her family.
This is something Sofia would never do for herself. She is one of the most selfless people I have ever known — the type who gives quietly, supports everyone around her, and shows up with love, strength, and grace without ever expecting anything in return.
But right now, Sofia and her family are carrying more than any family should ever have to carry.
And I cannot stand by and watch them struggle alone.
So I am asking for them.
Their Story
Sofia’s mother has been bravely fighting Stage 2 Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma since February 2024. She completed six weeks of radiation, and though she grew weak, the family held onto hope. When May came and she attended her grandson graduation — even in her wheelchair — she was there out of pure love and pride.
After treatment, they experienced a precious period of remission. A breath. A moment where life felt normal again.
But in May 2025, almost exactly one year later — on her birthday — the cancer returned. This time, the tumor is too close to her heart for radiation to be repeated.
The tumor began causing dangerous interruptions in her heartbeat, leading to a sudden collapse and a subdural brain bleed when she fell. She required a pacemaker to keep her heart stable.
The only treatment option left was oral immunotherapy — and it led to a rapid and heartbreaking decline. She stopped walking. She stopped eating. She became too weak to function. Hospital visits became constant. She now requires a PleurX drain in her right lung that must be drained every other day to help her breathe.
The therapy was stopped in September because her body simply could not handle any more.
Today, she needs 24-hour care.
She cannot be left alone.
Every day is physically, emotionally, and financially overwhelming.
Meanwhile, Sofia and her husband continue working full-time and supporting their two children who are both in college — all while providing care for her mother around the clock. They are stretched beyond what any human should bear — but they will never say that. They will never ask for help.
So I am asking for them.

This Family Gives. Now They Need Us.
Sofia and her family have always been the helpers. The ones who show up. The ones who love deeply and humbly.
Now it is our turn to show up for them.
No amount is too small.
Even sharing this campaign helps more than you know.
Your love, support, and prayers will help carry them through this unimaginably hard time.
From the bottom of my heart — thank you for reading, for caring, and for surrounding this family with compassion and strength.
With love,
Angie
