As most of you know Smokey was nearly hospitalized last week. Smokey passed out twice within minutes on me. We decided to rush him to Oradell Animal Hospital that night. They took him in right away and when they came back out I saw worry on their face as they were thinking the worst that Smokey could be having a stroke. With so much worry that night and into the morning we decided to go though with testing. We did a full bloodwork work up on him. His blood work came back showing he is anemic and his white blood cell count was high. Thinking some kind of possible infection in his brain or blood at this point they wanted to keep him overnight, put him on fluids and monitor him until he could see the rabbit savy vet in the morning, option two was to monitor him at home and give him oral antibiotics every 12 hours and to schedule a follow up appointment wifh his own vet. So I decided to bring him home and watch him closely the rest of the morning and all the next day. The next morning I made an appointment with his regular vet and they got me in on Monday, June 3rd. His vist went well and they said to keep him on the antibiotics and when he finishes them in 14 day to go back for some repeat bloodwork to check is his RBC level came up and his WBC went down.
Unfortunately this left me a pretty decent size bill of $772 a d is still climbing. But he's worth it!
A little about Smokey. I got Smokey a couple moths after losing my beautiful bunny daughter Lola in a very unfortunate way. The moment I laid eyes on Smokey I knew he was different and I had to have him! As I agree with adopt don't shop I was in a very dark place at that time in my life and I bought Smokey for $40 down in Princeton, NJ. (Smokey is the best $40 I've ever spent) he is worth more then any money in the world if you ask me! The moment I took him home I knew he was different, he wanted to explore everything not matter how dangerous and he wasn't scared or running away from anything (pretty bad instincts for a prey animal if you ask me LOL). He wanted attention for everyone and would just lay by you. I got thinking, what could I do for him to get out and get his pets. I eventually found this wonderful company called Creature Comfort Pet Therapy, I called them and talked on the phone asking many questions (Probably annoying them LOL). But I wanted to make sure this was right for him. Eventually I filled out the forms and got an interview and testing for Smokey. I was nervous but Smokey knew what he was doing. He went right into the testing center and passed with flying colors (OF COURSE he got to take a trip to Petsmart that day to pick out a special treat/toy). We scheduled our first therapy visit at the Sparta Library and he was a rockstar! I could see him in a different more relaxed mood and he just laid there by the kids while they loved him and read to him! Smokey has his own job and he loves his job and he knows when it's time to go to "work"! I can tell he absolutely loves what he does with Creature Comfort Pet Therapy and everyone loves him!
Unfortunately I'm struggling a little with payments at the moment and I'm trying hard to catch up. Anything helps, even just kind words honestly!
Smokey is doing much better now, we just have to wait for him to finish his antibiotics and get his follow up bloodwork. I'll keep everyone updated!
Realizing how much Smokey is loved by many really warms my heart! So many people reached out to me (and still are) checking up on him daily and see how he's doing! Thank you all SO much!
Smokey is my bestfriend, my bunny son and feeling like I was losing him while alone at the animal hospital for about three hours or more was a struggle! I'm glad he got ton come home with us that morning and is currently living his best bunny life!
Please feel free to message me anytime for Smokey updates and check out his Instagram @smokeytheflemishgiant for updates as well!
Thank you everyone!
