Help Smokey Bear Heal: Emergency Surgery for a Freak Accident

The Story

They say curiosity killed the cat, but in our case, a regular afternoon turned into a nightmare. My sweet boy, Smokey Bear, was involved in a freak accident where a storage box fell directly onto his front leg.

What we hoped was just a limp turned out to be every pet owner’s worst fear. After a long night at the emergency vet and multiple X-rays, the diagnosis is severe. Smokey Bear is currently in a lot of discomfort, but he is being a brave little soldier while we figure out his next steps.

The Medical Situation

The X-rays show that Smokey Bear has suffered two significant breaks in his right forelimb:

    •    A closed complete displaced spiral fracture of the humeral diaphysis (the middle of the upper arm bone).

    •    A complete displaced fracture of the distal humerus (near the elbow joint).

Because the fractures are "displaced," the bones are no longer aligned. This means Smokey Bear requires having his front leg amputated which would increase his mobility and lessen the risk of him injuring himself .

Why I’m Asking for Help

Smokey Bear is more than just a pet; he’s my family. Unfortunately, this emergency has hit at a time when my resources are incredibly limited. I am doing everything I can to provide for him, but the cost of specialty surgery, anesthesia, and recovery care is simply more than I can manage on my own.

The funds raised will go directly toward:

    •    Smokey’s Surgery: The orthopedic procedure of having his front leg being amputated.

    •    Hospitalization: Pain management and monitoring.

    •    Recovery: Follow-up X-rays and physical therapy to get him walking again.
