Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Strangers,

I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to share the story of my beloved companion, Smokey—a loyal friend and the best friend and protector of my son. His initial injury on his left leg occurred in July 2024, and the generous donations we received were used to fund his treatment, helping us avoid surgery at that time. However, despite those efforts, things took a heartbreaking turn. The torn ACL in his left leg, which was managed with medication, eventually forced him to rely excessively on his right leg, and that leg has now completely given out. As a result, his already compromised left leg is bearing all the pressure, leaving him in constant pain and making every step a struggle.

It breaks my heart to see him in pain every time I grab his leash. I watch with tears in my eyes as he, once full of joy and enthusiasm, now hesitates with every attempt to get up for a walk. Every time I look into his eyes, I am reminded of his suffering. I’ve grown so accustomed to the hope that he would get better that it’s nearly unbearable to witness his current condition. The guilt of enjoying a recent trip and even booking my son’s Disney trip next month only intensifies the pain, as I know I have to face his pained eyes every morning and afternoon when I try to walk him.

While Smokey is currently on medications to help manage his pain, they’re really just a temporary fix for a much bigger issue.

His awesome vet—the same one who treated his last injury—squeezed us in for an emergency visit today. For now, Smokey’s on strict bed rest for the next two weeks. At the end of that, we’ll go in for a follow-up where he’ll be sedated so the vet can get a clearer look and give the final go-ahead for his first TPLO surgery, which is scheduled for the following Wednesday.
