SLURP is a qpoc-centered shared art studio space and sometimes gallery that has been serving Oakland DIY community since 2016. Dozens of Bay Area artists have had studios here, which has fueled their practices and contributions to the larger community. SLURP offers some of the most affordable studio space around, while giving priority to queers, people of color, womxn and femmes. These community members are some of the most vulnerable and most hard hit by the economic consequences of COVID-19: artists everywhere are struggling to pay their own rent, let alone secondary rents like studio space. Several artists have moved home to be with family during this trying time, and we cannot get new studio mates until the shelter-in-place order has lifted. Art has saved all or our lives time and again, and the space to make it is vital!
