Support Slant's Journey to Stability and Healing

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

Slant is in need of community + mutual aid support right now for housing and relocation costs. She is black trans artist, writer, and hairstylist living in New York City.

Slant has been dealing with hostile housing that began with the gas and hot water going out, which turned into a yearslong legal battle with her unresponsive and abusive landlord. In March, this year, she was served an eviction notice. She lost so much time and money to it that she eventually decided to cut her losses, end the court case, and leave the apartment.

Because the decision to vacate the apartment was made in a crisis, Slant was unable to secure new housing or save money in time to ease the transition. Regretfully, Slant had to put all of her belongings into storage, sublet, eventually leaving the city, and most tragically, surrendered her dog, Gnocchi, to be rehomed upstate through a foster. If you’ve met Slant, you know how important and integral Gnocchi was to her. Gnocchi was an abandoned puppy that chose Slant on a lonely walk home, and has lived with Slant through several moves. He provided Slant with emotional support, endless love and companionship. She is left with the burden of grief and to heal from such a tragic loss. She is forced to pick up the pieces without him and start anew.

Currently, Slant is located in Mexico City, where a friend is subletting to her, at a fraction of what she might pay in New York as while she secured new housing. Slant has found a safe place to live in New York starting June 1st, although because she is currently unemployed, and subletting month-to-month, she has drained her finances, and will need support with moving expenses and the one-month’s rent and security deposit required. As Black trans person, housing is a vital part of her safety and a necessity for survival. Housing and financial security is imperative for her to improve her mental health, vitality, and ability to live as an active member of our community.

For a long time, I didn’t tell people the depth of what I was going through, because I had internalized shame for not being able to dig myself out of it, playing it cool. As a personal challenge, I am learning to be vulnerable in public, and to rely on friends and community, reminding myself that I don’t need to go through this alone. I don’t have the energy to be prideful anymore. If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can't survive.
