What seemed to be a normal back-to-school check-up turned into a doctor's visit that changed the remainder of our summer. The doctor recommended an X-ray to further evaluate the situation. While we were at the follow-up appointment to look at the X-rays, we were told that Skylar has scoliosis and they would need to do surgery within the next 6 months or she could potentially lose lower body function.
Skylar is scheduled to have idiopathic scoliosis surgery/spinal fusion surgery on August 25. After the surgery, she is to stay in the hospital for 2-4 weeks until she can start to walk on her own again. This is going to be a tough time for my family as the recovery time for this procedure is 6-12 months depending on the surgery results.
Unfortunately, this is not fully covered by insurance. The next steps are an MRI and 3 pre-op appointments before we can proceed with the surgery. We are fundraising to cover the medical expenses and support Skylar's recovery.
