Support Skylar's Family

Skylar Danielle was born on 10/15/19 at Toledo Children's Hospital where she was diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease and Charge Syndrome. She had several heart issues which included Pulmonary Atresia, an Absent Pulmonary Artery and Stenosis in Pulmonary Artery and Double outlet right Ventricle.
At four days old she was transferred from the Toledo Children's Hospital to C.S. Motts Children's Hospital where she underwent her first open heart surgery at 6 days old. This would be a temporary fix until she got older to undergo a full repair. The first 6 months of Skylar's life were spent in the hospital as she was having trouble with keeping her oxygen levels stable enough to go home & within that time frame, at 4 months old, the doctors diagnosed her with Bronchomalacia (flappy airways) and was high risk for aspiration due to not being able to swallow. Skylar became feeding tube dependent, along with tracheostomy and ventilator dependent, she was finally discharged home in April of 2020, and would return for another open heart surgery in August of 2020.
On August 31st she went in for a full repair of her heart and she did so well healing that she was able to come home on 9/11/20. Within two days of being home unfortunately Skylar started having seizures that caused a massive brain injury and because of the brain injury, her body took a big hit. Skylar had sepsis every few months damaging her kidneys and caused trouble to her heart as well. The last two years Skylar was hospitalized quite a few times for multiple different reasons, had a GJ Tube placed in her belly for feeding and a ilostemy bag for drainage from her digestive track.
Since March, Skylar had a rough time with her fluids and trouble keeping her kidneys in a good place. Over the course of several months the hospital tried to get her in a stable place to be discharged but during that admission she sustained quite a few injuries. Skylar's kidneys were having trouble keeping up with the fluid and medications which led to chronic kidney disease. Her parents knew that there would come a time where some difficult decisions would have to be made but didn’t know that time would be so soon. The hospital informed the family that there was no further treatment options that they would be able to provide without her rapidly declining. With the information that was provided it was decided to reach out to the palliative care team and hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Skylar was brought home on July 12th by ambulance to spend the last unknown amount of days of her life with her wonderful family, Mom-Kristin, Dad- Josh and big brother Deklan, as well as having many visits from those who loved her dearly. The Berfields are extremely grateful for everyone that has helped and checked in on them through Skylar's journey. We are thankful for all the nursing staff, physicians and surgeons that have helped Skylar throughout the course of her admissions and home visits.

On Thursday July 28th as our hearts were breaking, our beautiful Skylar received her super sonic Angel Wings (as her brother Deklan called it) and transitioned to her new life in Heaven surrounded by immediate family who loves her so much.

Funds raised will go towards funeral expenses & future bills while the Berfield family takes the time they need to grieve our Beautiful Angel Skylar
