Here is Skylar’s journey in her own words:
“For those who know me personally, you know that the last few months have been some of the hardest and most exhausting of my life.
In March, I suddenly began experiencing severe and frightening health symptoms that quickly became debilitating. After countless ER trips, testing, and hospitalizations, we learned that many of these complications were connected to my thyroid.
When I was 19 years old, I underwent radioactive treatment to remove thyroid nodules. Now at 26, those nodules have returned and have caused extreme thyroid dysfunction, leading to dangerous hormonal swings between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
At my worst, I experienced symptoms that bordered on thyroid storm — a life-threatening condition where the body becomes overwhelmed by excessive thyroid hormone. On the opposite end, I became so severely hypothyroid that there were days I could barely lift my head, speak clearly, or function normally.
What many people don’t realize is how important the thyroid is to the body. The thyroid is responsible for regulating metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, energy levels, nervous system function, breathing, digestion, hormones, and even muscle strength. When it stops functioning properly, it can affect nearly every organ system in the body.
One of the hardest parts of this experience has been the neurological and respiratory complications. I’ve developed severe neuropathy that affected my ability to speak normally, and at times I’ve had to relearn basic speech and communication. My diaphragm has also become extremely weak, making it difficult to breathe properly and leaving me exhausted from even simple daily activities.
I have been battling chronic illness since she was 19 years old. Over the years, I has worked incredibly hard to build a lifestyle and routine that allowed me to function and maintain stability despite ongoing health challenges. Reaching that point took years of persistence, adjustment, and sacrifice, and unfortunately even small disruptions can undo so much of that hard-earned progress. Because of this, maintaining consistent work and financial stability has been extremely difficult throughout my health journey.
Because of these complications, I now require supplemental oxygen and need a portable oxygen machine to safely manage day-to-day life. Unfortunately, the cost of medical care, ongoing testing, treatments, specialist visits, medications, and necessary medical equipment has become overwhelming.
I am raising $20,000 here to help cover:
• Medical bills and hospital expenses
• Specialist appointments and testing
• Medications and treatment costs
• A portable oxygen machine and respiratory support equipment
• Daily living expenses while navigating ongoing health complications
This has been one of the most physically and emotionally difficult seasons of my life, but I am continuing to fight for answers, stability, and healing.
If you are able to donate, share, or simply keep me in your thoughts and prayers, it would mean more than I can express. Thank you for supporting me during a time when I truly need it most.”
