Hello! I'm Skye Welch, a dedicated advocate, researcher, and gymnast with a passion for making a positive impact. With three college-level research reports under my belt, including one on women's rights and two on misophonia—one of which I had the privilege of being advised by a Duke University professor and director—I've been fortunate to have people in my life who inspire me to help others.
Now you may be wondering, what is misophonia? Misophonia is a neurological disorder in which certain sounds trigger your adrenal glands, putting the afflicted in an extreme fight or flight state at ordinary noises. Misophonia isn't just a topic for me—it's a cause I am personally affected by, that I've championed through pageantry and the start of founding of a charity and nonprofit organization. Although I suffer from this disorder, I refuse to let it define me. Furthermore, Drawing from my experiences as a New York State champion gymnast and world championship qualifier, I've leveraged the lessons learned from Olympians and Olympic coaches to inspire and educate youth about the transformative power of gymnastics.
Beyond the gym, I've been an active leader in my school's community service club, serving as an officer for all four years of high school and earning recognition such as the Service Club Interact Award and Outstanding Acts of Kindness Award, and being the only student with commendations from the principal and assistant principal. Additionally, I've contributed to my school's mock trial team, mentorship program, and have the privilege of studying medicine at Northwestern University and interning at Columbia University this summer.
As I continue to pursue my ambitions, I'm eager to make even more meaningful contributions to my community and beyond. Stay tuned for what's next on my journey of advocacy, athleticism, and service!
