Support Simon Webb and Frankie Kerr

As many of you know, Simon had a terrible fall last year that led to a traumatic brain injury which incapacitated him for 8 months. In that period of time, the home his family has been in for the past 40 years obtained a new landlord whose intention was to evict the current tenants for renovation (a “renoviction,” if you will). Simon was offered a buy out deal with he signed in confusion and under duress, and quickly tried to reverse as soon as he understood the true nature of the agreement (which was to evacuate their home by the end of November). At the same time his wife Frankie was in hospital with a broken hip, adding greatly to the stress.

Their case will be heard by the RTB in January, but if they rule in the Landlord’s favour, the contract will likely be considered breached and Frankie and Simon will be forced to move out without any compensation whatsoever.

You can imagine how devastating this past year has been, especially for someone on a small pension who has lived in the same home for 40 years. We are hoping for $10,000 to help cover moving costs, any legal fees, and to make the small cabin they will need to live in if they are evicted habitable, so they have somewhere they can stay. The costs will likely exceed that amount (the cabin doesn’t have any working appliances, needs a new roof, windows, plumbing etc), so any and all support you can offer during this time would be greatly appreciated.

I fell in love with Vancouver because of the mountains, the ocean, the endless trails, but it was the community that truly captured my heart. Watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” on Christmas Eve made me reflect on this. Although just a story, there is a poignancy in the telling that causes us to consider the kind of community we want to live in... the kind of people we want to be. Perhaps doing what is right will always be far more important than that extra dollar in your pocket. Perhaps there are enough George Bailey’s left in this City to stop Potter from taking the bank.

Many Thanks,

Kirsty Provan
