We are reaching out to you today with a heavy heart, seeking your urgent assistance and support for the resilient people of Sikkim who have recently faced an unprecedented tragedy. On October fourth, a flash flood triggered by a high-altitude glacial lake burst wreaked havoc in Sikkim and the northern parts of West Bengal, claiming the lives of at least 56 individuals. The catastrophe has left communities devastated, with many missing and in dire need of aid.
The flash flood, a result of a cloudburst in the early hours of Wednesday, caused widespread destruction, leaving behind a trail of devastation. Buildings, roads, bridges, and homes were washed away, and the lives of over 25,000 people have been severely impacted. More than 1,200 houses have been damaged, and 13 bridges, roads, and other vital structures have been swept away, disrupting the lives of countless families.
The current death toll stands at 56, with 26 bodies recovered from Sikkim and 30 found in the basin of the Teesta River in West Bengal. The search for at least 142 individuals, including Army personnel, is ongoing. Amidst this tragedy, the resilience of the affected communities shines through as 2,413 people have been rescued from different areas, and 6,875 people are currently seeking refuge in 22 relief camps set up across the state.
We are humbly reaching out to the global community, seeking your support and generosity to aid the survivors and help rebuild Sikkim. The funds raised through this GoFundMe campaign will be directed towards providing essential relief supplies, medical assistance, shelter, and rehabilitation to those affected by this devastating flash flood. The funds will be sent directly to the freedom centre in Sikkim who is already distributing resources and helping victims of the flood.
Your contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant difference and help bring hope to the hearts of those who have lost so much. Let us stand together in solidarity and support the resilient people of Sikkim as they rebuild their lives and communities. Thank you for your kindness and support during this difficult time.
