Help for Mrs Shirley Hickle's Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy
First, we want to thank everyone for your support, kindness, thoughts, and prayers!!
As most of you are aware, my mom survived a subarachnoid hemorrhage and stroke in the beginning of September. Just surviving this was amazing, as the 1 year mortality rate of this untreated is around 65% and is the most deadly type of stroke. Shortly after returning home from the ICU she was already making plans and working hard everyday to go back to work when she had to have 5 more aneurysms embolized. She was supposed to come back home the next day, but had another stroke during that procedure on December 19.
She lost the progress she had made and, once again, is working hard to walk again. Her balance was very affected and she is very unsteady. She is having to "re-teach" her brain to control her left arm/hand and leg/foot.
She has also lost some sensitivity in her left fingers. Her vision has been moderately affected, as has her speech. Her OT is recommending evaluation for Speech Therapy.
Her Physical and Occupational Therapists both believe she should be attending therapy at least 2, but preferably 3 times per week. She has not yet been evaluated for Speech Therapy. She has received help from the hospital to help with SOME of the cost, but it is still $72/ session. If she did the recommended therapy, it would come to well over $500/week.
Unfortunately, this is not possible, so she is only able to attend (maximum) 2 sessions/month (1 OT and 1 PT).
She is working very hard to get back to what she loves: working with kids. Unfortunately, she will not be able to do this without the recommended therapy.
Again, THANK YOU for your kindness and generosity!
