Hello everyone,
I'm reaching out today with a heart full of purpose as I embark on a life-changing journey of discovery. As a wordsmith whose magic is rooted in storytelling, creative writing, music, and natural science, I have always sought to connect with the deep, storied well of my heritage. Through extensive genealogical research and DNA tests, I have uncovered an incredible and surprising rich mosaic of peoples and ancestry, linking my lineage to fourteen nations and thirteen distinct ethnic tribes across the African continent, as well as to Cornwall, Wales, the Channel Islands, and Germanic Europe.
This autumn, I have an extraordinary opportunity to begin this physical journey of reconnection with a dual-purpose trip to Senegal and a vital service trip to Burkina Faso.
I have already secured my roundtrip airfare for the Senegal leg of this journey, which is a major step forward, and I am now seeking support for the remaining costs.
In Senegal, I will be attending the Future Waves symposium in Dakar, where I'll be presenting a paper on Frantz Fanon, climate change, and climate fiction. I will also be moderating an authors' panel of exciting African voices, and participating in a local book talk with other writers. Following the symposium, I will immerse myself in the vibrant culture of the art, markets, and museums and stand on the sacred shores of Gorée Island. Gorée is a historic place that holds profound ancestral significance, as it is the very land from which my people were taken and is said to be the last glimpse of home many would see again.
The trip to Burkina Faso is an extension of this ancestral pilgrimage and a vital research component for a future work. I will also be participating in a service trip, a meaningful way to engage with the community by helping to build a new school, meeting with local students, and donating books and educational materials. We are also bringing vital health supplies—including blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes—as well as clothing to the community. Those who can will also bring a laptop to donate.
Your support will help me make this first, critical step in what I hope will be a lifelong journey of discovery. Every contribution, no matter the size, will directly fund this incredible experience.
Here is a breakdown of the estimated expenses for this pilgrimage:
For Senegal (Future Waves Symposium & Ancestral Exploration)
In-Country Costs (Accommodations, Transportation, Sightseeing): $608 - $940
Food: $189
Souvenirs & Incidentals: $100 - $200
Estimated Subtotal: $897 - $1,329
For Burkina Faso Service Trip
In-Country Costs (Accommodations, Transportation, Food, etc.): $1,500 - $2,600 - I MAY BE ABLE TO STAY WITH A FRIEND'S KIND FAMILY! Will keep you posted on that.
Essential Upfront Costs (for both trips)
Roundtrip Airfare: $1,400 (THE SENEGAL FLIGHT IS COVERED!, but I still need support for the flight to Burkina Faso and other in-country travel.)
Vaccinations & Antimalarial Medication: $300 - $800
Visa & Entry Fees: $140 - $145
Grand Total Estimated Costs: $3,809 - $5,884
These figures represent a realistic budget to cover my travel, living expenses, and the essential costs of this two-part journey. By helping me get there, you're not just supporting a trip, you're helping me honor my ancestors and bring their stories home through my work.
Thank you for your consideration and for being a part of this personal, roots journey with me.
All best,
Sheree
