Update on Mom

Hi everyone,

We wanted to share an update on Mom and just say thank you again for all the love, prayers, and support. It truly means more than words.

A little while ago, we sent Mom down to North Carolina to live with our brother Alan. Believe it or not — all four of us kids actually agreed on something for once — and we made the decision together that this was the best move for her. It wasn’t easy, but we all knew she’d be closer to great hospitals, warmer weather, and family who could help her day-to-day.

Alan recently went back up to help Dad pack and move the RV down, and now Mom and Dad are finally back together again . It’s been such a comfort for both of them to be in the same place and surrounded by family.

She’s got a referral to Duke and we’re also working on another referral to a great hospital nearby. Things are moving slowly, but we’re making progress. The tumors on her kidneys are still growing, so getting her in with the right specialists as soon as possible is our main focus right now.

Mom also wanted us to tell everyone how thankful she is. Because of all your donations and kindness, she’s been able to pay off the medical debt from the clinic and hospital back in South Dakota/North Dakota. That peace of mind has been such a blessing for her.

From all of us — thank you for standing by her, for every message, prayer, and donation. Your support keeps her spirits up and helps us all keep going. We’re so grateful to have such amazing people in her corner.

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out on behalf of my mom, Shelley, who is going through an incredibly serious and urgent medical situation. She’s always put the needs of others before her own but now, she truly needs our help.

After experiencing some concerning symptoms, doctors discovered multiple tumors in both of her kidneys. She has a large 11 cm mass on her left kidney, and three additional masses on her right kidney totaling 7 cm.

She just had a biopsy earlier this week, and the results point to an oncocytic neoplasm, which most likely represents an oncocytoma a tumor that needs to be surgically removed to confirm whether it’s benign or cancerous. Her surgery consultation is scheduled for the first week of August to remove the mass from her left kidney.

On top of that, her doctors also discovered serious liver damage. The liver biopsy showed cirrhosis, stage 4 fibrosis, grade 3 inflammation, and signs of mild steatosis and possible early dysplasia, which can lead to cancer. What makes this even more alarming is that Shelley is not a drinker, so the extent of liver damage is both unexpected and likely the result of an underlying medical condition. This adds another layer of urgency and complexity to her care.

Unfortunately, my mom doesn’t currently have health coverage. She was planning to enroll in Medicare when she turns 65 in February, but her health took a turn before she could get there. We’re doing everything we can to secure coverage, but the process takes time and the medical expenses are already piling up from imaging, lab work, biopsies, and now surgery.

That’s why we’re asking for your help.

Every donation will go directly toward Shelley’s medical care from her upcoming kidney surgery to liver monitoring, recovery, and anything she’ll need moving forward. Even if you can’t donate, just sharing this page helps more than you know.

My mom is incredibly strong, but no one should have to go through something like this alone or while worrying about how they’ll afford the care they urgently need.
