Update from mom Shayleigh has spent 25 days in hospital still unable to walk and was told she has atleast 4 more weeks in hospital. Shayleigh is staying in high spirits but has stressed how much she wishes she could walk again.
Hi, my name is Jenny and I am starting this GoFundMe for a friend of mine. Her daughter Shayleigh was recently diagnosed with Myelitis, which is inflammation of the spinal cord, most commonly known as transverse myelitis (TM). It's a rare neurological condition where the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath, disrupting nerve signals between the brain and body. This leads to symptoms like pain, weakness, numbness, and bladder/bowel issues, often triggered by infections or autoimmune disorders. Treatment focuses on steroids and plasma exchange to reduce inflammation, with recovery varying from full to long-term disability, depending on the cause and severity. They don’t know what caused it; she was a healthy little girl and the light of her mom’s life. She is currently at Kansas City Children's Hospital, where she will continue to be until she is stable and able to go home. She has not been able to walk or sit up on her own (she sat up today for 14 minutes with physical therapy), a small improvement but a long way to go.
This is an update from her mom from today:
UPDATE on Shayleigh: She has myelitis.
Dr's are wanting her to score -30/-40 to get the ventilator out; she scored a -29 today.
PT came and she sat up for 14 minutes by herself.
She has a little more feeling and movement in her legs and feet.
Keep praying for Shayleigh; she has a LONG way to go.
