Help Keep Shawn’s Family by His Side During a Critical Hospital Stay

Shawn Rosdahl Toczyl is a 44-year-old son, family member, and deeply kind human who is currently at UCSF in San Francisco undergoing a complex and high-risk heart procedure. His medical journey has been long and difficult, and right now, his situation is uncertain.

What is certain is how much it matters that he is not alone.

Shawn’s mom, Deanna, is staying near him so she can be present, advocate for him, and simply be there — as any parent would want to be. Unfortunately, the cost of being in San Francisco during a prolonged hospital stay is overwhelming. Lodging, food, gas, and parking expenses are adding up quickly, and the family has very limited financial resources.

Asking for help does not come easily. Deanna is a proud and private person, and this request comes from a place of necessity, not expectation. This fundraiser is being shared so that the burden does not fall entirely on her shoulders at a time when her energy needs to be focused on her son.

Shawn has lived for years with significant medical complexity, including advanced heart disease, kidney failure requiring dialysis, diabetes, and other serious conditions. Despite everything, he has remained gentle, thoughtful, and deeply respectful of life. Those who know him describe him as someone who tries to move through the world with kindness — even now, in the middle of so much uncertainty.

Funds raised will go directly toward:

Basic lodging so his mom can stay close to the hospital

Food and daily necessities

Gas and parking costs while Shawn is hospitalized

If funds exceed the immediate travel-related needs, any additional support will be used to help Shawn maintain stability at home, including paying past-due utilities and essential household bills while he is hospitalized and recovering. This helps ensure that when Shawn is able to return home, he is not coming back to mounting crises or the loss of basic services.
