For those who know Shawn, he is a loving father, faithful friend, and an enduring leader. He is first and foremost a dedicated family man, joined by his wife and two amazing daughters. He has an unwavering sense of optimism, an infectious laugh, and always selflessly holds the interest of others ahead of his own. Over the years, Shawn has been the proverbial safe ship in the storm for the numerous people who have leaned on him for comfort and guidance. No matter how dire the circumstances might be, Shawn can always bring much welcomed levity to a situation with his boundless sense of humor. More About Shawn's Medical Emergency and The Ask For Help

Recently, Shawn suffered a rare rupture of his esophagus just behind his lung and adjacent to his heart. That tear resulted in significant internal bleeding, and was immediately life threatening. Thanks to the help of his quick-thinking daughter, Shawn was rushed to the hospital to undergo a life-saving surgery, which has historically had a high mortality rate. The surgery lasted more than eight hours, and was extremely invasive. After spending almost two weeks in intensive care, Shawn was released home, where he could only receive nourishment through a feeding tube. Shawn has slowly continued his recovery at home, which has had continuing challenges due to the severity of the injury and lingering impacts from the surgery. While Shawn still has a long healing process ahead of him, his determination, discipline and positive outlook have helped with his recovery, and even his own doctors are amazed by his strength.

As you can imagine, such a serious medical event involves not just the initial emergency hospital trip and surgery, but also incurs many follow-up visits both in the hospital and at-home, and requires numerous medications to fight infection and help the healing process, all of which are costly. To compound matters, the severity of the injury and procedure has also severely limited Shawn's mobility and has prevented him from working for the foreseeable future.
