My name Is Paula Gillian, I am the Mother-in-law of Shaun Carmichael and my daughter, Amanda, his wife has perfectly matched to give her husband one of her kidneys to save his life. Here’s their story:

Our family is beginning one of the biggest and most challenging journeys of our lives, and we’re reaching out for support during this difficult time.

My husband, Shaun, is facing a kidney transplant that will require two major surgeries. To prepare his body, Shaun will need to begin dialysis two weeks prior to his first surgery so his system can adjust. On January 29, Shaun will undergo his first surgery, where both of his kidneys will be removed. After this procedure, he will need time to heal and will remain on dialysis until his body is strong enough for the transplant.

Once Shaun has healed, we will move forward with the second surgery — I will be donating my kidney to him. While we are incredibly grateful that we are a match and that this transplant is possible, it also means a long and difficult recovery period for both of us.

Throughout this journey, Shaun will be out of work starting January 8 until both surgeries are complete and he is fully healed. After I donate my kidney, I will also be unable to work for 6–8 weeks while I recover. During this time, we will be facing mounting medical bills while also trying to cover everyday living expenses.

We are doing all of this while raising our three amazing kids — Ayla (19), Tristen (16), and Gunnar (9) — who are our biggest motivation and strength through everything. Our goal is to get Shaun healthy so he can be here for them for many, many years to come.
