My name is ShaTarri Dickerson, and I am a single mother raising my 12-year-old son. We are currently staying in a hotel until we can qualify for housing assistance.

We have tried the Arlington Life Shelter twice, but both times we were set up for failure instead of success. Our lease was modified without our knowledge, and we were wrongfully evicted. We also tried living at the Dallas Life Shelter, but we were told we did not qualify for the program because my son attends virtual learning.

I do not have a criminal record, and I do not drink or smoke. My son has been a straight-A student ever since he started virtual learning, where he is free from the fear of being bullied or racially profiled by those who abuse their authority.

My son's special education services have been revoked, and he is currently on a 504 plan due to his ADHD diagnosis. However, I have concerns about the accuracy of this diagnosis, as it was made during a time of false accusations against us. A full bottle of Adderall, which was prescribed to him over two years ago, was returned to his doctor on March 20, 2025. This explains why I refuse to move back to Tarrant County or enroll him in an independent school district for in-person learning.

Recently, I had to submit an immediate resignation letter to my employer because I do not have childcare. The only person who offered to watch my child suggested leaving him alone in a hotel room while I went to work, which led me to stop associating with her. I have applied for a childcare position, hoping I can work while also providing care for my son, while waiting for my name to be called on the waiting list for the Dallas County Child Care Group.

In summary, the hardships we face are not our fault; they stem from individuals who choose to racially profile us and abuse their authority. This has put not only my son and me in danger but also my family members who, unfortunately, are no longer here.
