Help Shannon Receive the Critical Cleft Palate Surgery She Needs

Hi, my name is Jennifer. Shannon and I have been friends since the early '90s. As many of you know, Shannon was born with a cleft lip and palate. Throughout her life, she has undergone more than 29 surgeries—including bone grafts, sinus and ear reconstruction, and multiple procedures to rebuild and maintain her mouth and upper jaw. She has faced each surgery with strength and resilience, never asking for anything in return.

Recently, Shannon received difficult news: her cleft palate has reopened, and the hardware from past surgeries is now failing and must be removed. To correct this, she needs another major surgical procedure. Unfortunately, due to the way insurance separates structural medical care from dental care, most of the required treatment will not be covered.

The out-of-pocket cost for Shannon’s portion of the surgery is expected to be over $13,000, and that does not include her deductible or additional follow-up care. She will also need a reinforcing apparatus placed in her upper jaw to support future implants—another necessary step to preserve both function and long-term health.

Without this surgery, Shannon’s palate will continue to deteriorate, leading to serious complications. While her condition isn’t immediately life-threatening, it is absolutely quality-of-life.

Shannon has endured so much over the years—physically, emotionally, and financially. She was hesitant to ask for help, but her friends and family encouraged her to reach out to the community that loves her.
