A lot of people have been asking what has happened and for updates on my dad, so I figured I would go ahead and update everyone in one place. Last Friday my dad was admitted to the ICU at Woodward hospital. By Saturday his condition was worsening to a point that we felt it would be best to transfer him to another hospital in Oklahoma City. He was intubated and put on a ventilator at Woodward hospital prior to being Medi flighted, and then was directly admitted to the ICU at the hospital there. By Monday, he needed advanced care and was transferred to the ECMO ICU and was put on V-V ECMO, which is considered life support for the lungs; a machine that can oxygenate the blood since the lungs aren’t able to. This has all been caused due to a Staph infection in his body/bloodstream. Doctors are still unsure of where exactly the Staph came from at this time. Once doctors examined his heart, they found a vegetation, or area of bacteria, on his aortic valve. Upon further examination of my dad’s heart, they found that one of the leaflets in that valve was completely deteriorated, causing blood backflow into his lungs. Surgery to remove the valve was moved to Wednesday morning. Surgery went smoothly, and the surgeon had no issues at all. My dad was then transferred to cardiothoracic ICU. By Wednesday evening, his heart was not pumping effectively and needed to be put on V-A ECMO, which is considered complete life support. By 10 o’clock that night, he was being rushed to the operating room for emergency surgery. His blood pressure was not stable, and his heart was not pumping enough to maintain much of blood pressure at all. Once they opened him back up, they found a lot of blood around his heart. They were able to remove that blood and leave his chest open until this morning on 6/28/24. He went in for surgery again this morning at 7 a.m. His chest was closed, and he was taken off V-A ECMO, which is great news! His heart is very strong at this time. The biggest concern for the doctors is his lungs. His lungs are still very sick and are still requiring the ECMO. Another concern for him at this time is his fingers and toes. Due to some of the medications and the ECMO he was receiving, this caused decreased blood flow to his extremities. We are taking it one day at a time, hour by hour and minute by minute right now and taking the small victories when we can! We have had several people ask what they can do during this time, so we decided to put this together for anyone who wishes to help with expenses as he is going to have a long recovery ahead of him. Our family thanks each and every one of you that has reached out and have been praying for him and our family at this time. Please keep the prayers coming as they are working slowly but surely! A lot of people know how Shane is, and he would never want to ask for a handout. But as many people know, he has a big heart and would do anything for anybody, so now it’s time for us to be able to help him. We will continue to update everyone on here as much as possible going forward. Again, our family can’t thank everyone enough for everything.
