With our deepest sorrow, the Asian Financial Society (AFS) announces that our friend and former Board Member Shan Chen passed away on April 19, 2022. Shan served on the Board of Directors of AFS from January 2017 to March 2022. He was active on our FinTech and Corporate Sponsorship Committees. In his professional life, Shan was an entrepreneur with more than 15 years of experience in the alternative investment industry.

Shan was well versed in private funds risk, compliance, and operations. Most recently, Shan was a Consultant at Ernst & Young in New York. Before that, he was a Partner at the New Land Capital, a real estate private equity firm based in New York. He was also head of US operations for CubeTech Global Asset, a full-service solutions provider for cross-border investments, a firm with headquarters in Beijing, China.

Before CubeTech, Shan was co-founder of the financial technology firm ConceptONE, where he served as CTO and head of analytics. Under Shan’s leadership, the company grew its offerings to a full range of managed services that included risk, compliance, middle-back office, and advisory with clients from around the world. ConceptONE was later acquired by a leading FinTech firm Axioma.

Earlier in his career, Shan provided technology innovation and solutions to many major financial firms such as Chase Manhattan Bank and Deutsche Bank. He and his group were always the earliest to embrace new technologies in many of his business engagements. Shan’s first job out of college was with the China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, where he spent three years as a civil engineer, designing bridges in Wuhan.

Shan held a Master’s degree in Engineering from the University of Toledo and a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Tongji University.

Shan was a multi-talented person whose passions included painting, Chinese calligraphy, dancing, singing, and gardening. He was also a gourmet cook. Shan will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.

He is survived by his wife Ling Da and daughters Stella, a first-year student at Brown University, and Lindsay, a high school student at Syosset, Long Island. Shan and Ling have known each other for 36 years.

A GoFundMe fundraising is set up to benefit Stella and Lindsay’s education. Kindly consider donating to help support the family during this difficult time.
