On August 17, Shamoi’s home was destroyed by a fire. What the fire did not destroy was subsequently damaged by smoke and water. Shamoi has two young children and is now left with nothing. She has been self-paying for hotel rooms to keep her and her family off of the streets. Shamoi works tirelessly for others around her as a Community Health Worker for the Maine Mobile Health Program, advocating for farmworkers and ensuring they receive access to health care while they are in the state of Maine. She works with farmworkers throughout the state, many of whom hail from her native country of Jamaica. Shamoi serves as a friendly face as the workers acclimate to life in the States and learn about the U.S. healthcare system. She has helped so many folks access basic life-sustaining care that they have missed out on in the past, and she is now in need of the support of her community as she begins to pick up the pieces. We are grateful that she and her family are safe, and we want to support her during the process of rebuilding their lives after this tragedy.
