In August 2024, my life changed in an instant when I suffered a traumatic fall while responding to an active code in the mental health rehabilitation facility where I worked. Over a year later, I am still facing relentless pain, limited mobility and stability, countless appointments, and ongoing treatments for multiple injuries throughout my body. Every day is a battle just to get through basic tasks, and the weight of recovery often feels overwhelming.
Major Surgery and a Long Recovery
Recently, I underwent major right shoulder surgery. My doctors have said the first three months will be the most difficult, and it will likely take at least a year to regain strength and full functionality. While this surgery is necessary for long-term healing, it has made daily life even more challenging, and I continue to require care for other injuries as well.
Financial Strain and Urgent Need
My husband plans to take family medical leave to care for me during this critical period, but he does not have accrued paid time off to help cover lost wages. Additionally, both of his jobs have drastically reduced his hours, leaving us struggling to make ends meet and behind on bills. We are now faced with the impossible choice of focusing on my recovery by getting the assistance, I need from my husband or keeping a roof over our heads since we can’t afford for him not to work. Workers’ compensation only covers a fraction of our expenses, and without help, we cannot keep up with essential living costs.
How Your Support Will Help
We are asking for help to cover the everyday life expenses that make healing possible during the critical first three months of healing post surgery, including:
• Rent to keep a safe and stable home
• Utilities like electricity, water, trash/sewage, and internet
• Groceries
• Travel to appointments and treatments
• Car payments and insurance to maintain transportation
• Catching up on overdue bills and other necessary household expenses
Your support will give us the stability, breathing room, and peace of mind we desperately need to focus on recovery. It will help me navigate the first three most challenging months of healing and continue working toward regaining strength and independence over the coming year without sacrificing under the ultimatum of financial security versus vital recovery.
Why Your Help Matters
Every donation, share, and kind message is a lifeline. Your generosity gives us hope, courage, and strength to keep moving forward, reminding us that even in the darkest seasons, we are not alone. We are trusting God to see us through, and our eternally grateful for the community that also helps uplift us. Anything helps.
Thank you so much.
With much love,
Shakur
